Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnosis work in therapy?

Hypnosis is likened to the daydreaming state where your mind just wanders off.  It’s a naturally occurring level of consciousness that we all reach spontaneously.

In hypnotherapy, the therapist works to facilitate that change using relaxation techniques to help you reach a state where the conscious part of your mind is relaxed and the subconscious is then more open to positive suggestion.  The therapist will then use suggestion to ‘talk’ to your subconscious to help encourage the change you are looking for.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Hypnosis conducted by a fully qualified and well-trained therapist or health care professional is considered a safe, complementary and alternative medical treatment for everyday issues for everyday people. However, hypnosis may not be appropriate in people with severe mental illness.

What will be the first stage?

Initially, there will be a free consultation, usually lasting around one hour, to discuss your requirements and goals as well as information about the issue/s, lifestyle, medical symptoms, a medical history, and any other relevant details.

There will be an explanation of how the hypnotherapy process works.   Then, practical details such as cost, how many sessions may be needed and about the cancellation policy are discussed.

What will happen in a session?

A typical session would start with a welcoming chat where you can ask any questions, or add more information you feel would benefit the change work.

Then the session proceeds into getting comfortable as you are led into a deep physical and mental relaxation, known as the induction.

Once deeply relaxed, the hypnotherapeutic change work begins using techniques and approaches discussed and agreed to help you achieve your goals. When that has been done, you are then guided back into full wakefulness and out of trance completely.

Following that there will be a short time to ask any questions and to discuss progress made.

Does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy works for most people.  Some are more susceptible to suggestion than others. To gain the full benefit one must have a desire and expectancy for change.  Trust of and feeling comfortable with your hypnotherapist is very important.

Will I lose consciousness?

Consciousness is heightened during hypnosis.  You will be even more aware of what is going on. Your body may appear to be ‘asleep’ but you can still hear and think. Concentration, imagination and memory all dramatically improve while in hypnosis.

Can I get stuck in trance?

No, there is no possibility of being stuck in trance.  Sometimes it is possible to drift into sleep if left and you would wake from that sleep naturally, feeling perfectly OK.

Will I remember what happened?

Most people do remember what happens in trance, unless the therapist puts in the suggestion for them to not remember.  There can be therapeutic reasons why the therapist would suggest to stop the conscious mind remembering.

Will I tell my secrets or asked to give private information?

No.  The subconscious mind will always protect us and be selective.

Can the hypnotist control me?

The client is always in control and always decided whether to cooperate with suggestions. A suggestion that violates any strongly held feeling, moral, ethical or religious belief will be automatically rejected by both your conscious and unconscious levels of mind.

Can children be hypnotised?

Hypnotherapy is considered both effective and safe for children and young people.  Children respond very well as they are naturally imaginative and have more open access to their subconscious mind a great deal more than adults.

The type of common issues experienced in childhood includes bed-wetting, sleep problems, food problems, school performance problems, exam stress, low self-esteem, phobias, mobile phone, and device addiction, and separation anxiety.

Can I drive after a hypnotherapy session?

Yes, once out of trance you are completely capable of driving.  It’s important to take your time before leaving to stretch and shake yourself about a little to make sure you become fully alert.

How long will hypnotherapy sessions last?

Session timing is dependent on the therapist and the client’s circumstances. Sessions for children usually last one hour and for adults 90 minutes to 2 hours, spaced apart weekly or as agreed with the therapist.

How many sessions of hypnotherapy will I need?

This is really determined at the outset when discussing the issues in the initial free consultation.  A single session is effective for a quick phobia release but for most that come to Fiona Vitel Hypnotherapy will have a minimum of three and upwards depending on progress and needs.

Is hypnotherapy covered by health insurance?

There are several Private Health Cash Plans available and some of them will cover hypnotherapy sessions. Always check with your provider beforehand. You can find out more about Private Health Cash Plans for alternative therapy here.
